Legal support when families need it most

Keeping Families Connected Minnesota prevents family separation through interdisciplinary legal services and equity-based child welfare policy reform.


Founded in 2024, KFCMN bridges critical gaps in legal services to relative caregivers. KFCMN serves relative caregivers, both those impacted by Minnesota’s child welfare system and those caring for children without child protection involvement. The interdisciplinary legal services being developed at KFCMN prevents family separation and advances equity for those most at risk of child welfare intervention.

Our Interdisciplinary Services

KFCMN’s team of attorneys will soon be joined by a social worker and a community engagement director. Together, they will build our interdisciplinary practice model in close partnership with community members who have first-hand experience trying to access legal support in child welfare cases. KFCMN's trauma-informed legal services ensure that families get the information, resources and representation they need to keep children connected to people they know and love throughout all stages of child welfare intervention and efforts to prevent intervention.

  • Child Welfare Legal Hotline available to relatives, parents, attorneys with clients who are relatives or parents, and nonprofit organization staff seeking legal advice or information to support a relative or parent with child welfare-related concerns or services to prevent intervention.
  • Relative/Kin Legal Clincs delivered in community locations, including Family Resource Centers throughout the state. Clinics include basic rights information and individual consultations.
  • Direct Representation for relatives with more complex situations, including issues such as licensing concerns, appeals and permanency petitions. Direct representation cases are accepted based on urgency, complexity, financial need and KFCMN's attorney's capacity at the time services are needed.
